A worker died after a large metal object fell on him at a major Hong Kong construction site on Tuesday.

Emergency personnel were called to the Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel, where the incident occurred, soon after 11am.

"Initial information showed the worker was hit by an iron rack at the site," a police spokesman said, adding officers were investigating and the Labour Department had been notified.

Police said the metal object measured 17 metres by 1.3 metres.

The 37-year-old suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to Tseung Kwan O Hospital, where he was certified dead shortly before noon.

It was the city's second fatal work death in a week. Last Monday, a 61-year-old man died after he fell down a slope in Shek Kip Mei. He was carrying out maintenance work at the time.

The HK$15 billion Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin tunnel is expected to be completed next year. The project comprises the construction of a 3.8km dual carriageway connecting Po Shun Road and the Cross Bay Link in the east, with the Lam Tin Interchange and Eastern Harbour Tunnel in the west.

It will be an alternative route to the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel for coping with traffic demand arising from development works in the Tseung Kwan O and Kwun Tong areas.
