BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TEHRAN -- Iran reported on Wednesday 3,134 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 160,696, the state TV reported.
Kianush Jahanpur, head of Public Relations and Information Center of the Iranian health ministry, said during his daily briefing that 70 people died of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 8,012.
Out of the new cases, 493 were hospitalized, he added.

WINDHOEK -- Namibian President Hage Geingob on Wednesday inaugurated a 12-bed isolation facility built by a Chinese firm to help Namibia contain the COVID-19 outbreak.
"Inauguration of this state-of-the-art facility shows that Namibia is serious in fighting this pandemic," Geingob said. "We are lucky that we do not have any fatalities but our worry are the truck drivers and we continue to worry on how to handle them at borders while bringing the food supplies."

KABUL -- The Afghan Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday confirmed 758 new COVID-19 cases, bringing to 17,267 the total number of patients in the country.
"A total of 1,323 tests were conducted within the past 24 hours, and 758 cases were positive for COVID-19 in 17 provinces," the ministry said in a statement.
Twenty-four COVID patients died within the period, taking the death toll to 294, the statement added.

MUMBAI -- Mumbai, the epicenter of COVID-19 cases in India, has evacuated patients from its makeshift open hospitals in the city for fear of flooding due to cyclone Nisarga on Wednesday afternoon.
"Although the COVID-19 hospital can sustain strong winds of up to 80 km-100 km per hour, however, with human lives at stake, as a precautionary measure, all the patients (about 150) from the hospital are being shifted by BMC (BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation)," the city's infrastructure development authority MMRDA said in a statement.

KAMPALA -- Uganda on Wednesday reported 18 new cases of COVID-19, taking the total number of infections in the country to 507, the country's ministry of health said.
Of the 1,086 samples collected from cross-border cargo truck drivers and communities on Tuesday, six Ugandan cross-border cargo truck drivers and 12 contacts tested positive for the virus, according to a statement from the ministry.

MOSCOW -- Russia has confirmed 8,536 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising its total to 432,277, its coronavirus response center said in a statement Wednesday.
The death toll increased by 178 to 5,215, while 195,957 people have recovered, including 8,972 over the last 24 hours, according to the statement. ■
