Hongkongers can now add one of the region's most notable golfing events to the growing list of sporting competitions cancelled because of the ongoing protests in the city.

On Thursday, the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club issued a short statement revealing it is cancelling the 2019 edition, which was to take place from October 17-20.

The statement said that after a lengthy discussion with the PGA Tour, the club reluctantly agreed to cancel this year's competition "due to the ongoing situation of unrest that continues in Hong Kong".

The statement noted that, from an operational and safety perspective, it would not be feasible to host the PGA Tour Series " China event to the same level that is has in the past.
