An elderly woman and her son died on Thursday after a fire broke out at their Hong Kong public housing flat.

At about 5.30am, firefighters received a report and found the pair, in their 70s and 50s respectively, inside their flat in Mui Yuen House on Chuk Yuen North Estate in Wong Tai Sin, according to police.

The fire was largely put out about 15 minutes later.

While the son was pronounced dead at the scene, his mother was in a coma and sent to Caritas Medical Centre in Sham Shui Po, where she later died.
