CAIRO -- Most of the major Middle East countries on Monday announced the further ease of the precautions against the novel coronavirus, as Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim festival of breaking the fast at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, is being observed across most of the region.
In Turkey, the hardest hit country by the coronavirus in the Middle East, reported 987 new cases on Monday, raising the total number to 157,814, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said.

WARSAW -- The number of deaths caused by the COVID-19 epidemic in Poland has reached 1,007 by Monday evening.
With official infection numbers still increasing linearly, reaching 21,631, Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski declared that the peak of the epidemic in the country has passed.
Schools have partly reopened to receive pupils up to the age of 9 for daycare, without scheduled classes.

AMMAN -- King Abdullah II of Jordan on Monday commended all efforts exerted by the country's various bodies in the battle against COVID-19.
The king made the remarks in an address to the nation on the occasion of Jordan's 74th Independence Day.
"Our battle with coronavirus is one of those tough tests that have shown the efficiency of the state, its enduring institutions, and the strength of its army and security forces," the king said in the address, according to a statement by the Royal Court obtained by Xinhua.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday visited a national military cemetery and a historic fort to mark the Memorial Day, as the country's coronavirus death toll approaches 100,000.
"Tens of thousands of service members and national guardsmen are on the front lines of our war against this terrible virus," Trump said.
New York state and local governments will provide death benefits for those frontline workers who died from COVID-19, said Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday, also the country's annual Memorial Day.

TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday lifted the state of emergency in Japan for the five remaining prefectures, including Tokyo, as the spread of the virus has been brought under control.
"Today the government will lift the state of emergency across the nation. We've set some of the most strict criteria in the world to lift the declaration, and we concluded that prefectures across the country have met that standard," the Japanese leader told a press conference.

ADDIS ABABA -- The African Union (AU) said it is to raise 1 million U.S. dollars on Monday for its COVID-19 response fund, as the 55-member pan-African bloc marks the Africa Day.
Established by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat in March, the AU COVID-19 Response Fund aims to strengthen the continental response to COVID-19 and mitigate its socio-economic and humanitarian impact on African populations.

LUSAKA -- Zambia has received more COVID-19 medical materials from the Jack Ma Foundation, a government official said Monday.
Emmanuel Mwamba, Zambia's permanent representative to the African Union and Ambassador to Ethiopia said the consignment was dispatched to Zambia last Friday.

MOSCOW -- Russia has confirmed 8,946 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, raising its total number of infections to 353,427, its coronavirus response center said in a statement Monday.
The death toll grew by 92 to 3,633, while 118,798 people have recovered, including 5,499 over the last 24 hours, according to the statement.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland reported seven new imported COVID-19 cases Monday, bringing the total number of imported cases to 1,731, the National Health Commission said Tuesday.
Of them, five were reported in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and two in Shanghai and Fujian respectively, the commission said, adding that no new suspected cases were reported. ■
