BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW YORK -- Global confirmed COVID-19 cases topped 6 million on Saturday, reaching 6,003,762 as of 4:32 p.m. (2032 GMT), according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

A total of 367,356 people worldwide have died of the disease, the data showed.

ROME -- The COVID-19 hospitalizations decreased in Italy on Saturday, the Civil Protection Department said, continuing a positive trend for the hard-hit Mediterranean nation as it geared up for the end of domestic travel restrictions next week.

Total active infections stood at 43,691, down from 46,175 on Friday, according to the Civil Protection Department.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health reported 506 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 34,366.

Of the newly confirmed cases, five were cases in the community, and 501 were work permit holders residing in dormitories. There were no imported cases.

NEW DELHI -- India will enter into the fifth phase of lockdown with effect from June 1 till June 30, to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, said new guidelines issued by the federal home (internal security) ministry on Saturday.

The Lockdown 5.0 will, however, be with some more relaxations, like reopening of shopping malls, saloons, hotels and restaurants, religious places, etc, though with restrictions like social distancing.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi authorities Saturday imposed a week-long curfew starting from May 31 to June 6 to curb the latest increase in infections of coronavirus in the country, the Iraqi government said.

LONDON -- Another 215 COVID-19 patients have died in Britain as of Friday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 38,376, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said Saturday.

SANTIAGO -- The Chilean Ministry of Health announced on Saturday that the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country had risen to 94,858, with 997 deaths.

Over the last 24 hours, 4,220 new cases were reported along with 53 more deaths.

CAPE TOWN -- South Africa has so far recorded a total of 30,967 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 1,727 new cases reported over last 24 hours, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Saturday.

The country also reported 32 more COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the total national deaths to 643, Mkhize said in his daily update, adding that a total of 701,883 tests had been taken across the country. ■
