A fugitive who had been on the run for more than 10 years for his alleged role in the brutal killing of a Hong Kong triad faction leader has surrendered to police.

Leung Kwok-chung, 50, approached Wan Chai Police Station with a lawyer on Tuesday afternoon.

He was then arrested and later charged with murder over the death of Lee Tai-lung, 41, on August 4, 2009 in Tsim Sha Tsui.

The case will be mentioned at Eastern Court on Thursday.

Lee, who was the Tsim Sha Tsui faction leader of the Sun Yee On, was ambushed in a predawn attack after parking his Mercedes-Benz at the five-star Kowloon Shangri-La hotel in Mody Road.

Lee was first rammed by a seven-seater van and then hacked by three knife-wielding men who jumped out of the car.

The triad leader later died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Once a boxer, Lee went by the nickname "Thai-lung" and became a red-pole fighter for the society, a senior member who usually plays an enforcing role.

Leung had been wanted along with two other men. Police posted a HK$600,000 reward to find them.
