The wide ranging auction will also include personal effects from the American artist’s estate
While most people probably think of paintings of desert landscapes and yonic flowers when they hear the name Georgia O’Keeffe, the artist dappled in a wide variety of mediums, including pottery.
In an upcoming sale titled Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe, Juan Hamilton: Passage, a collection of over 100 pieces from Juan Hamilton, friend and confidante of Georgia O’Keeffe, will be going under the hammer, including O’Keeffe’s pottery.
“Featuring never-before-seen artworks and personal effects from the estates of Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz, this sale traces the artistic evolutions and shared histories of these three American artists,” said Sotheby’s in a statement.
Hamilton maintained a close relationship with O’Keeffe late in her life and inherited much of her estate upon her death, which included paintings, drawings, and sculpted works by O’Keeffe, as well as many works by Alfred Stieglitz, her former husband, and personal effects from the both of them.
“I think a lot of people don’t realise that she worked in this medium,” Kayla Carlsen, Sotheby’s head of American art, told Architectural Digest about O’Keeffe’s pottery work. “It's a new and interesting side of her.”
The sale will include six different sculpted works, three of them textured and three more simple and minimalist. The pieces are expected to fetch between US$8,000 to $15,000, although this estimate is said to be conservative as nothing of this sort has ever gone under the hammer and is expected to intrigue art collectors around the world.
“We [also] have material ranging from the period she spent at the University of Virginia, to New York, to New Mexico, to later in life when she knew Juan [Hamilton],” Carlsen said. “It's rare that we get the opportunity to sell personal effects from any artist—let alone an artist as iconic as O'Keeffe—and speak to the various stages of her life.”
