BRUSSELS, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in European countries.

LONDON -- Another 412 COVID-19 patients have died in Britain as of Tuesday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 37,460, the Department of Health and Social Care said Wednesday.

The figures include deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community.

As of Wednesday morning, 267,240 people have tested positive in Britain, a daily increase of 2,013, according to the department.

ROME -- Italy reported 117 new COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's toll to 33,072, out of total infection cases of 231,139, according to fresh figures on Wednesday.

Nationwide, the number of active infections has dropped by 1,976 to 50,966 cases, according to the Civil Protection Department.

Of those who tested positive for the new coronavirus, 505 are in intensive care, 16 fewer compared to Tuesday, and 7,729 are hospitalized with symptoms, a decrease of 188 patients compared to Tuesday.

BERLIN -- New infections with COVID-19 in Germany remained under last week's average as the number of confirmed cases increased by 362 within one day to 179,364, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Wednesday.

According to the RKI, the number of deaths from the new coronavirus in Germany increased by 47 to 8,349 on Wednesday, resulting in a fatality rate of around 4.7 percent in Germany.

The number of people currently infected with COVID-10 in Germany continued to decline and fell to around 16,500 on Wednesday as the estimated number of people in Germany who had already recovered from COVID-19 increased by around 800 within one day to 162,800, according to the RKI.

BRUSSELS -- Belgium has recorded 137 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 36 new deaths in a 24-hour period, taking the infection tally to 57,592 and 9,364 dead, according to figures released on Wednesday by the public health institute Sciensano.

Of the 9,364 dead, 48 percent had died in hospital, 51 percent in nursing homes, and about 0.8 percent elsewhere, according to Sciensano. The hospital deaths are all confirmed cases. Fatalities in nursing homes were 25 percent confirmed by test while the remaining 75 percent were presumed by symptoms.

The number of 137 new infections was 61 less than that of the previous 24-hour period, which confirmed the downward trend of virus transmission, according to Sciensano.
