Coronavirus updates, April 8: Global death toll from COVID-19 exceeds 82,000 as cases top 1.4 mln

"Behind every one of those numbers is an individual, is a family, is a mother, is a father, is a sister, is a brother," said Governor of U.S.  New York state Andrew Cuomo Tuesday as the state suffered the deadliest 24 hours yet since the pandemic took hold.

BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The novel coronavirus has infected more than 1.4 million people worldwide as the global death toll from COVID-19 is nearing 83,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

By 1110 GMT on Wednesday, the death toll worldwide stood at 82,992 as the global tally of cases reached 1,441,128, while more than 307,819 people have recovered, an interactive map maintained by Johns Hopkins University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering showed.

The following are the updates on the contagious disease.

WARSAW -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Poland has reached the 5,000 mark, with 136 deaths in total, the country's health ministry said on Wednesday.

The numbers in Poland kept rising exponentially even after the government placed additional restrictions on the country's residents earlier this week.

MOSCOW -- Russia has tallied 8,672 cases of COVID-19 in 81 out of 85 regions as of Wednesday, registering a new daily record rise of 1,175, official data showed.

All Russians, except for those working for essential institutions and establishments, are on paid leave from March 30 to April 30 as part of national efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

KIEV -- The death toll from COVID-19 in Ukraine rose to 52 on Wednesday, as the number of confirmed cases reached 1,668, the country's health ministry said.

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan has reported 42 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 270, its health ministry said Wednesday.

JERUSALEM -- Israel reported six new death cases from the novel coronavirus, bringing the death toll to 71, the state's Ministry of Health said Wednesday.

The six victims, aged 67 to 97, all suffered from other serious diseases.

The ministry added that a total of 9,404 people in Israel were tested positive for COVID-19 so far.

ULAN BATOR -- The total number of COVID-19 cases has reached 16 in Mongolia after one more case was confirmed on Wednesday.

"A Mongolian citizen who has been isolated in the northern Mongolian Selenge province tested positive for COVID-19," Dulmaa Nyamkhuu, head of the country's National Center for Communicable Disease (NCCD), told a press conference.

CANBERRA -- Health Minister Greg Hunt has issued a plea for Australians to maintain social distancing to continue limiting the spread of COVID-19.

As of 6 a.m. local time on Wednesday, there have been 5,956 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia, according to the country's Department of Health. It represents an increase of about 2 percent from 5,844 cases as of Tuesday morning.

BANGKOK -- Thailand's eastern seaside tourist city Pattaya is imposing a temporary lockdown to keep out all visitors in sustained effort to stem the COVID-19 pandemic.

Phakharathorn Thianchai, Provincial Governor of Chonburi province, where Pattaya is located, confirmed on Wednesday no entry by any visitors, Thai or foreign, into Pattaya under the lockdown, effective from Thursday until the end of this month, in addition to curfew, currently enforced nationwide between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. daily.■
