Chinese organizations donate desks to Kenyan slum schools

A Chinese non-governmental organization (NGO), Dream Building Service Association (DBSA), together with the Amity Foundation, donated 125 desks to Kenyan slum schools on Wednesday in order to boost access to education.

NAIROBI, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese non-governmental organization (NGO), Dream Building Service Association (DBSA), on Wednesday partnered with the Amity Foundation to donate 125 desks to Kenyan slum schools in order to boost access to education.

Yimenghan Liu, co-founder of DBSA, said that the equipment is earmarked for five schools located in the Mathare informal settlement that is situated about 10 kilometers northeast of the capital city Nairobi's central business district.

He noted DBSA plans to donate more school desks in the future as many schools in the Mathare slum lack sufficient desks to cater for the growing population of students.

Elizabeth Kimani, principal of Changqin DBSA School, which was one of the beneficiary schools, said that Chinese volunteers have played a key role in improving the infrastructure of schools in the Mathare slum.

Kimani said that the desks will help to bridge the school equipment deficit that exists in the Mathare slum schools.

"With the donation from our Chinese friends, we hope to be able to admit more pupils to join our school so that we can boost the overall literacy of students in the informal area," she added.

She revealed that in addition to the desks, Chinese donors have over the years provided free meals to students in order to boost enrollment of students in the slum.  ■
