BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese football player has appealed to the public to help him get unpaid salary from a bankrupt club.

Han Xu, a player of the Guangdong Southern Tigers club which declared bankruptcy on February 13, seemed desperate to get his unpaid salary from the club.

"This is a flagrant flouting of laws and Chinese football regulations," he wrote on Friday on Weibo, China's Twitter-like social media platform.

According to a report by Shanghai-based Oriental Sports Daily on Friday, Qiu Shengjiong, Han's teammate at the club last season, disclosed that the club became debt-ridden from 2019 and could not pay players' salaries.

"I did not get a penny from the club during the second half of 2019," he said.

Guangdong Southern Tigers, along with the other eight clubs, has been stripped of eligibility to play in China's professional league this season, which has been delayed due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus.

The Chinese Footbal Association (CFA) introduced regulations to dampen spending by clubs, including a salary cap, to set standards for national team players and to raise the level of women's football at its Professional League Conference on Dec. 20, 2018. (Xinhua/Ding Ting)

These clubs "failed to submit, by February 3, 2020, the confirmation forms for full payment of coaches, athletes and staff wages and bonuses for 2019," the Chinese Football Association (CFA) said in a statement on its website.

The CFA announced last October that failure to pay salaries of players, coaches and staff on time will result in disqualification for next season's professional league matches.  ■
