Asia-Pacific Coronavirus News: India reports highest daily spike of 6,767 new COVID-19 cases

-- India reports 6,767 new COVID-19 cases, 131,868 in total;

-- South Korea reports 25 new COVID-19 cases, 11,190 in total;

-- Singapore reports 642 new COVID-19 cases, 31,068 in total;

-- Nepal reports 68 new COVID-19 cases, 584 in total;

-- No new case of COVID-19 reported in New Zealand, total confirmed cases stay at 1,154.

HONG KONG, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia-Pacific countries:

NEW DELHI -- India's federal health ministry Sunday morning said 147 new deaths due to COVID-19, besides fresh 6,767 positive cases were reported since Saturday in the country, taking the number of deaths to 3,867 and total cases to 131,868.

This is the highest one day spike in COVID-19 cases so far in the country, showed the data.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 25 more cases of the COVID-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of 0:00 a.m. Sunday local time, raising the total number of infections to 11,190.

The daily caseload stayed above 20 for the third straight day. Of the new cases, eight were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 1,212.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 642 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 31,068.

Of the new cases, 99 percent are linked to known clusters, while the rest are pending contact tracing.

KATHMANDU -- With the single day spike of 68 new cases, the number of COVID-19 cases in Nepal had reached 584, the Nepali Ministry of Health and Population said Saturday.

Nepal has been witnessing a rapid rise in the cases of the COVID-19 in recent days. On Friday, the number of cases in Nepal crossed 500 mark and it was close to 600 on Saturday.

WELLINGTON -- There are only 27 active cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand as the country reported no new case on Sunday, said a statement of the Ministry of Health.

This means New Zealand's combined total number of confirmed and probable cases stays at 1,504, of which 1,154 are confirmed, it said.

New Zealand currently has 1,456 people reported as having recovered from COVID-19, an increase of one on Saturday. This means 97 percent of all confirmed and probable cases have recovered. ■
