HONG KONG, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia-Pacific countries.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh confirmed 112 more COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time Thursday, bringing the total to 330.

This is by far Bangladesh's biggest daily jump over a 24-hour period since the country announced its first detection of three COVID-19 cases on March 8.

One man in his 60s was confirmed dead in Dhaka, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country to 21.

MANILA -- The Philippines reported 206 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number to 4,076.

A total of 124 patients have recovered and 203 died from the viral disease so far.

The country's Education Secretary Leonor Briones confirmed on Thursday that she had tested positive for the virus, who is the second Cabinet member to get infected with the COVID-19 in the country, after Interior Secretary Eduardo Ano.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The number of the COVID-19 cases in Malaysia totaled at 4,228 after 109 new cases were recorded, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

Among the infections, 1,608 have been cured and discharged from hospital, while 72 are currently being held in intensive care and 43 of those are in need of assisted breathing.

The number of fatalities had risen to 67 after another two deaths were recorded, both of them having suffered from other health problems prior to being infected.

BANGKOK -- Thailand's Ministry of Public Health on Thursday reported 54 new COVID-19 infections and two more deaths, raising the number of total cases in the country to 2,423 and the death toll to 32.

The new cases also include four medical staff, and with that, the total number of medical and public health staff infected with the disease has now risen to 80.

KABUL -- A total of 40 more positive cases were confirmed in Afghanistan, bringing thr total to 484, Wahidullah Mayar, the spokesman for the Public Health Ministry, said on Thursday.

Fifteen COVID-19 affected patients have died since the outbreak of the virus in mid February in Afghanistan and 32 others have recovered, Mayar asserted.

TOKYO -- Japan's health ministry and local governments said Thursday the number of COVID-19 infections nationwide had risen to 5,002 cases as of 2:00 p.m. local time here, two days after a state of emergency was declared to contain the fast spread of COVID-19 infections across the country.

The death toll in Japan from the pneumonia-causing virus currently stands at a total of 116 people, according to the health ministry, with the figure including those from the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama, close to Tokyo.

NEW DELHI -- India's Health Ministry said on Thursday that the death toll due to COVID-19 in India rose to 166 and the total number of confirmed cases in the country reached 5,734.

This is a jump of 17 deaths and an increase of 540 cases since Wednesday morning.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 39 more cases of the COVID-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of midnight Thursday local time, raising the total number of infections to 10,423.

The newly confirmed cases hovered around 50 for the fourth straight day. Of the total new cases, 23 were imported ones.

Four more deaths were confirmed, lifting the death toll to 204. The total fatality rate came in at 1.96 percent.
