WUHAN, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- A total of 31 COVID-19 patients in severe condition on Wednesday were discharged from a hospital after recovery in Wuhan, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

"We have so far received 1,055 patients at our hospital. All the 31 patients discharged today were previously in critical condition," said Zhang Yu, Party secretary of the Union Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

"Their recovery tells us that patients in critical condition can be cured," Zhang said.

Apart from medication, a positive attitude is very important. Patients' symptoms can be better relieved in wards where patients show optimism, said Zhang Jianchu, professor with the hospital's respiration department.

"My father is over 70 years old, and he has diabetes and a heart bypass. Seeing my father cured, I had confidence too, which was really important for me to recover from the disease," said a female patient surnamed Niu who was discharged on Wednesday.

As of Wednesday, 145 patients had been discharged from the hospital after recovery. Hubei saw 1,266 patients discharged from hospital after recovery on Tuesday, bringing the total number of discharged patients in the province to 9,128.  ■
