雖然他曾在紐約視覺藝術學院修顫數個夜間課程，但世人大多視他為無師自通的攝影師。他本身來自黑幫家庭，甚至被這些充滿神秘感的人所吸引，以至Bruce曾經拍過一個關於黑幫的攝影系列 “Tough guys”，他認為這些人只在做自己，毫不掩飾，如此的想法跟Bruce本身的攝影概念十分相似。

Bruce喜愛拍攝被主流審美世界漠視的一群，他們的外表和打扮或者異於常人，尤其Bruce如此近距離地用閃光燈拍，就更加把人的瑕疵拍得巨細無遺，但這又如何？人本身的千姿百態不是更值得細嚼嗎？
