BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- India's federal health ministry on Sunday morning reported 551 new deaths from COVID-19 and 28,637 new cases during the past 24 hours across the country, taking the number of deaths to 22,674 and the total infections to 849,553.

This is said to be the highest single day spike in the number of fresh cases in the country so far.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Ministry of Health reported 1,197 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday night, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 37,463.

The ministry said that the number of death cases rose from 351 to 354, while the number of patients in serious condition rose from 130 to 134, out of 471 patients currently hospitalized.

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan reported a record high of 719 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, raising the national count to 10,629.

The Republican Headquarters for the Prevention of the Spread of COVID-19 said that the new cases were recorded after 2,479 laboratory tests were conducted across the country during the past 24 hours.

COLOMBO -- The number of COVID-19 patients in Sri Lanka surpassed 2,500 on Sunday after 43 new patients were detected mainly from a drug rehabilitation center in the north central part of the country, the government information department said.

The number of patients reached 2,511 on Sunday morning out of which 1,980 patients have recovered and been successfully discharged.

WASHINGTON -- The United States is trapped in "a dark Covid hole" with "no plan to get out," the CNN said in a recent in-depth analysis.

"There are only contradictions, obfuscations and confusion from the federal officials who ought to be charting a national course," said the analysis published Friday, citing "leadership vacuum" as the reason behind U.S. failure in epidemic control.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 44 more cases of the COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Sunday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 13,417.

The daily caseload rose above 40 in two days amid the continued small cluster infections and imported cases.

Of the new cases, 23 were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 1,829. It continued to increase in double digits for 17 straight days.

BEIJING -- Beijing reported no new confirmed domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases Saturday, the municipal health commission said Sunday.

This marked that the Chinese capital city had reported no new confirmed domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases for six consecutive days.

No asymptomatic cases or suspected cases were reported. A total of 11 patients were discharged from hospital after recovery on Saturday in the city, the commission said in a daily report.

ALGIERS -- Algerian Health Minister Abderrahman Benbouzid on Saturday instructed the Central Pharmacy of Hospitals (PCH) to distribute personal protective equipment (PPE) to medical staff to fight the COVID-19 "as soon as possible," official APS news agency reported.

"The situation generated by the pandemic is worrying," the minister told reporters during an inspection visit to PCH headquarters in Algiers. "It is an emergency and a priority to make medical personnel safe with the necessary personal protective equipment."  ■
