Parmigiani Fleurier is predominantly known for its elegant dress watches that are, at the same time, both classic and complicated. The brand has now unveiled a range of women’s-only watches as part of its successful Tonda 1950 line, which is named for the birth year of the watchmaker’s founder Michel Parmigiani. These new models are set with diamonds, aventurine, lace and mother of pearl. Choose between 33mm and 36mm—both case sizes seamlessly hug women’s wrists.

Water is a watch’s mortal enemy, but in 2012 HYT co-founder Patrick Berdoz decided that he was going to use liquid to indicate time. The concept itself wasn’t groundbreaking—the first water clocks were used thousands of years ago—but nobody had figured out how to create one that was wristsize.

Fast-forward to today, and HYT has incorporated fluid into its mechanics. The brand’s latest novelty, the H0 Black Fluid, uses an orange liquid in conjunction with Super- Luminova to display the time. It looks particularly cool against the watch’s all-black dial.

The new five-piece Submersible Mike Horn Edition by Panerai offers collectors the chance to not only own one of Panerai’s most impressive dive watches, but also embark on an expedition to the Arctic with the famed explorer Mike Horn himself. A skeletonised titanium in-house movement showcases the watch’s ticking tourbillon, as well as numerous other gizmos and gadgets housed within the recycled steel case. Additional features include water-resistance up to 300 metres and an engraved sailboat design on the case back.

Sotheby’s has only just begun hosting virtual sales—the auction house debuted its digital sales programme on April 1—but it’s already proven that online watch auctions have a growing appeal.

US$2.2M

The auction house’s first two virtual watch sales totalled an impressive US$2.2 million.

95%

During these two watch sales, 95 per cent of lots were sold, with more than half achieving prices above their high estimate.

US$306K

In late March, a Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona sold for roughly US$167,188. Days later, that number was nearly doubled by another Rolex Daytona at Sotheby’s, which sold for $306,518.

Breitling

During a recent Instagram Live with Watches of Switzerland CEO Brian Duffy, it was revealed that Breitling's brand new Superocean Heritage 57 Rainbow watch, which we’re all obsessed with, sold out within hours of its release. Limited to just 250 pieces, this kaleidoscopic wristwatch has a fun concave bezel and oversized Super-Luminova hour markers. But not to worry, there are other models still available in this new capsule line of sea watches, all of which are inspired by the California surf culture of the 1960s.

Jaeger-LeCoultre

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Control might not be the watchmaker’s oldest collection, but it’s one of its most timeless. Launched in 1992, Master Control has remained popular thanks to its modern features (a silicon escapement, an extended power reserve and more) and clean design, which is inspired by the round watches popularised in the 1950s that—let’s face it—go with anything and everything. For Watches & Wonders 2020, JLC has added a new pink gold alloy to the collection, dubbed Le Grand Rose gold, and has upped each watch’s power reserve to a convenient 70 hours. Outstanding!

Cartier

In 1904, Louis Cartier made his aviator friend Alberto Santos-Dumont what is widely considered to be the first pilot’s wristwatch. Since relaunching the subsequently named Santos collection in 2018, Cartier has released additional models with new case and dial combinations. This year a clean-cut Santos de Cartier was released in a moody all-black. It’s slightly larger than its predecessors, which adds to the timepiece’s macho design, and it features a nifty date complication at six o’clock. The black coating covers the entire case, including the watch’s bezel and crown, while an inky-black dial contrasts beautifully against white Roman numerals. Choose from a rubber or alligator leather strap.

Patek Philippe produces titanium watches in exceptionally small numbers, which is why the latest announcement from Christie’s Hong Kong has caused such a stir. The auction house has announced two sales in July and November (dates are subject to change) that will showcase a single-owner collection in which the highlight is a one-of-a-kind titanium Patek. Christie’s Hong Kong has described the sale as the “most valuable single-owner collection ever offered in Asia” and estimates its total value at about US$12 million. Get your cheque books ready.

Marion Cotillard has been photographed wearing Chopard’s Ice Cube and Magical Setting collections, including a geometric timepiece in rose gold that’s as elegant as it is minimal. The French actress herself turned her hand to design in 2015, when she co-created a collection with the Swiss maison. Her “green” creations used Fair-mined gold and ethically sourced coloured gemstones as part of Eco-Age’s Green Carpet Challenge, which aims to promote the idea that glamour and sustainability in jewellery and watchmaking can go hand-in-hand.
