每每自然界有異象，大家就會擔心有天災會降臨。近日美國加州多處海灘，湧現千上萬、長得像是水母的「神祕藍色啫喱」，畫面十分壯觀。根據專家指出，這些外表酷似「啫喱」的藍色生物，其實是「帆水母」（By-the-Wind Sailor、velella velella），雖然毒性輕微、對人類身體影響不大，但仍會產生輕微刺痛，呼籲民眾不要隨便觸碰。

自今年4月開始，美國加州北面馬林郡（Marin County），至南方聖克萊門特（San Clemente）的海灘，都可以看見大量「帆水母」。研究人員認為，可能近期加州外海的海水較溫暖，導致風速增加，使得平時借助風力和潮流移動的帆水母被大量沖上海岸，最終擱淺受困而死亡。

加州大學遠洋無脊椎收藏家Linsey Sala指出，帆水母和其他真正的水母一樣擁有刺細胞，雖然毒性不至於危害人體，只會產生輕微刺痛，但她仍建議民眾不要隨便觸碰。另外，生物學家Liz Sweet表示：「你不知道自己會否過敏，所以我建議大家『只看不碰』，並且不要讓你的狗狗吃掉牠們。」
